Impact and crash simulation software are mature technologies that address well-understood challenges. But load cases are getting more complex, and manufacturers are always looking for higher-fidelity simulations. They need to continue pushing the envelope for more efficient and powerful crash and safety simulation.

Enter Cray and Altair, pairing a high performance computing (HPC) solution featuring Cray® XC40™ supercomputing systems with Altair RADIOSS software, tested to over 16,000 cores. This powerhouse gives engineers everything they need to improve speed and accuracy of their design analysis.

Real-World Model

Cray and Altair used a real-world model to study the performance of RADIOSS crash simulation software at high core counts. They ran the benchmark on the public domain NCAC FORD Taurus model, test using the RADIOSS 14.0 beta version on a Cray XC40 system with the Intel® Xeon® processor E5-2698 V3 (16 core, 2.3 GHz). Up to 512 nodes were used for these simulations.

Their results:

  • Performance speedup proven at 16,382 cores
  • Quasi-linear speedup at up to 1,000 cores
  • Hybrid parallelization of RADIOSS enables efficiency at both smaller and larger core counts

Unparalleled Global Expertise

Cray and Altair combine their unparalleled global expertise to provide a consolidated HPC platform for computer-aided engineering design, simulation and analysis. These two leaders work closely to solve the world’s most challenging problems.
